Dear Michael Oak community

Welcome to the new school year. We hope you have all had a safe, healthy and happy holiday time with family and friends. The staff has been working hard to ensure that classrooms are freshly painted and set up beautifully, lessons are prepared, admin systems are all in place, things are fixed and gardens tended with care. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school and wish all the children (and young adults) in our care a successful, exciting year, full of discoveries and adventure.

We ended last year with wonderful plays from both senior and junior classes, a beautiful eurythmy performance, art exhibitions, festivals and a feeling of satisfaction that, despite the interference of Covid, it had been a successful year for Michael Oak.

College would like to thank Class Six for the amazing work they did in creating a Covid-friendly Fair for us. We know it took a lot of work, planning and much debate to take some flavour of our Fairs into an online environment.

Many thanks are always due to those who work so hard to make our school what it is. College would like to thank Jon Duncan for the enthusiastic and committed way with which he took on the tasks of Trustee Chair. We wish Jon, Yael, Ben and Molly much joy as they begin their life in the colder climes of Switzerland. Thank you to Len Verwey who has so ably strapped on the chairperson’s shoes. We would also like to thank Lester Scharnick and Leigh Moore for the work they did as Faculty chairs. This year, our faculty chairs are Sarah Ferguson-Brown (HS) and Kristal Willemse/Ann Kantey (PS). In the Kindergarten the chairperson will rotate termly, with Nicole Sparks in the chair for the first term.

We also need to thank Roy Davids for chairing the College of Teachers so ably, with humour and commitment. Roy will remain on the College but is taking a well-earned break from chairing. Tine Bohm and Leigh Whitesman will be co-chairing College this year. The other College members are Anne-Marie Winkelman, Kathy Abbott, Jeanine Twine, David Machado, Vincent Message and George Gabriel. Pam Schneider attends as minute taker. Please note that correspondence for the attention of College can be sent to college@michaeloak.org.za.

Michael Oak welcomes two new staff members this year: Brenda Gunning, who will be teaching Matric English, and Sihle Mbodlela, who is the new Primary School assistant. We wish them a happy stay at Michael Oak.

The High School held an important Visioning workshop at the end of last year. Please see below for a summary of their discussion.

We began this year with step one in our Transformation journey with a workshop on Monday 17th. This was attended by all staff and proved to be thoughtful and reflective. It offered an important moment of coming together to consider the tasks of our school and staff in order to remain a successful school, true to Waldorf pedagogy and awake to the needs of our modern age.

We wish you all a good year ahead.

Kind regards

The College of Teachers
